Jo Stafford - All The Things You Are.wmv
One of the great ladies of song giving a five star treatment to a beautiful 1939 song from the movie "Very Warm for May"
Brief history...
"All the Things You Are" is a song composed by Jerome Kern, with lyrics written by Oscar Hammerstein II. It was written for the musical Very Warm for May (1939), where it was introduced by Hiram Sherman, Frances Mercer, Hollace Shaw, and Ralph Stuart. It was later featured in the film Broadway Rhythm (1944), and was performed during the opening credits and as a recurring theme for the romantic comedy A Letter for Evie (1945). Used most recently, cinematically, in the 2005 film Mrs. Henderson Presents starring Judi Dench. The song ranked in the top five of the Record Buying Guide of Billboard, a pre-retail listing which surveyed primarily the jukebox industry. Recordings by Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, and Frankie Masters propelled the song during its initial popularity.
Lyrics.
ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE
(Oscar Hammerstein II / Jerome Kern)
Time and again I've longed for adventure,
Something to make my heart beat the faster.
What did I long for? I never really knew.
Finding your love I've found my adventure,
Touching your hand, my heart beats the faster,
All that I want in all of this world is you.
(Chorus)
You are the promised kiss of springtime
That makes the lonely winter seem long.
You are the breathless hush of evening
That trembles on the brink of a lovely song.
You are the angel glow that lights a star,
The dearest things I know are what you are.
Some day my happy arms will hold you,
And some day I'll know that moment divine,
When all the things you are, are mine!
