Μπεν Ε. Κινγκ: Έσβησε η φωνή του Stand by me

Ο Μπεν Ε. Κινγκ (Ben E. King), ο συνθέτης και τραγουδιστής της θρυλικής επιτυχίας Stand by me (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTCfQ6Bb8QE), πέθανε χθες την Πέμπτη σε ηλικία 76 ετών, όπως ανακοίνωσε ο εκπρόσωπός του.

 Ο Μπέντζαμιν Ερλ Κινγκ, όπως ήταν το πραγματικό του όνομα, γεννήθηκε στη Βόρεια Καρολίνα το 1938 αλλά μεγάλωσε στη Νέα Υόρκη.

Ήταν ο βασικός τραγουδιστής του ριθμ-εντ-μπλουζ συγκροτήματος The Drifters και στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του 1950 συνέθεσε και ερμήνευσε πολλά κλασικά τραγούδια, όπως τα Save the last dance for me και This magic moment.

Ο Κινγκ έγινε ωστόσο διάσημος το 1961, μετά την αποχώρησή του από το συγκρότημα, με το τραγούδι Stand by me που αργότερα ψηφίστηκε ως ένα από τα "Τραγούδια του αιώνα". Το ίδιο τραγούδι χρησιμοποιήθηκε για τη μουσική επένδυση της ομώνυμης ταινίας ("Στάσου πλάι μου" στα ελληνικά) σχεδόν 25 χρόνια αργότερα, οπότε και έφτασε ξανά στην κορυφή των τσαρτ.

Ο Μπεν Ε. Κινγκ, που ζούσε τα τελευταία χρόνια στο Νιου Τζέρσι, πέθανε την Πέμπτη από φυσικά αίτια, διευκρίνισε ο εκπρόσωπός του Φιλ Μπράουν.
