"Girl"
is a song written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney based on an
original idea by Lennon and performed by The Beatles on their 1965 album
Rubber Soul. "Girl" was the last complete song recorded for that album. "Girl"
was probably one of the most melancholy and complex of their earlier
love songs. The songs instrumental has specific comparisons to Greek
music; similar to "And I Love Her" and "Michelle".
According to
McCartney, he contributed the lines "Was she told when she was young
that pain would lead to pleasure" and "That a man must break his back to
earn his day of leisure. However, in a 1970 interview with Rolling
Stone, Lennon claimed that he came up with these lines as a comment on
Christianity which he was "opposed to at the time". He explained: "I was
just talking about Christianity in that - a thing like you have to be
tortured to attain heaven. [...] - be tortured and then it'll be
alright, which seems to be a bit true but not in their concept of it.
But I didn't believe in that, that you have to be tortured to attain
anything, it just so happens that you were.
McCartney also stated that the song's backing vocals were influenced by The Beach Boys, he said: "
The Beach Boys had a song out where they'd done 'la la la' and we
loved the innocence of that and wanted to copy it, but not use the same
phrase".
Lennon said that the fantasy girl in the song's lyric
was an archetype he had been searching for his entire life ("There is no
such thing as the girl — she was a dream") and finally found in Yoko
Ono. In an interview for Rolling Stone magazine on 5 December 1980,
Lennon said his 1980 song "Woman": " Reminds me of a Beatles track,
but I wasn't trying to make it sound like that. I did it as I did 'Girl'
many years ago. So this is the grown-up version of 'Girl.
In
November 1977, Capitol Records scheduled the United States release of
"Girl" backed with "You're Going to Lose That Girl" as a single (Capitol
4506) to accompany the release of Love Songs, a Beatles' compilation
album that contains both of these songs. However, the single was
cancelled before it was issued. Reception
"When I heard this,
as a young teenager, it hit the nail on the head," Jackson Browne told
Rolling Stone. "It embodied the feelings I was living with every day —
completely burning with sexual desire, with almost a regret at being so
overpowered. Cover versions Dalida recorded "Girl" in Italian and
released it as "Amo" on her 1967 Italian album "Piccolo Ragazzo" (which
is the Italian version of "Little Man" by Sonny Bono and Cher) Jim
Sturgess sang "Girl" in the film musical Across the Universe Rhett
Miller recorded a version of "Girl" that can be found on the album This
Bird Has Flown -- A 40th Anniversary Tribute to the Beatles' Rubber Soul
St. Louis Union recorded a cover version in 1965, that was released
in January 1966, and reached #11 on the UK Singles Chart Tiny Tim
recorded a dramatic reinterpretation with the band Brave Combo in 1996
The Truth recorded a cover version on the Pye label (7N.17035) in
1966 (b/w "Jailer Bring Me Water") Ronnie Von recorded a Portuguese
version called "Meu Bem" in 1966; his version was released in Brazil
before The Beatles version, and made such success that when The Beatles
version arrived, the radios used to do this announcement: "And now
Ronnie Von's song 'Girl' in the voice of The Beatles" Serj Tankian
has covered the song live numerous times Joe Jackson covered the
song on numerous stops on his 2003 tour for Volume 4, and this version
appeared on the bonus disc of Afterlife Roberts Gobziņš recorded a
version of the song with Latvian lyrics, appearing on his first album in
1993 Chris de Burgh covered the song in his 1995 album "Beautiful
Dreams" Paul Carrack recorded the song for his 2007 album "Old, New,
Borrowed and Blue"

"Wish
You Were Here" is the title track on Pink Floyd's 1975 album Wish You
Were Here. Its lyrics encompass Roger Waters' feelings of alienation from
other people. Like most of the album, it refers to former Pink Floyd
member Syd Barrett and his breakdown. David Gilmour and Waters
collaborated to write the music.
"Wish You Were Here"
So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell, blue skies from pain. Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail? A smile from a veil? Do you think you can tell? And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts? Hot ashes for trees? Hot air for a cool breeze? Cold comfort for change? And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage? How I wish, how I wish you were here. We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year, Running over the same old ground. What have we found? The same old fears. Wish you were here.

A session musician and producer, Gates met in 1968 guitarist/vocalist James Griffin, who had already released a solo album called Summer Holiday. Griffin hired Gates to produce a new album, and the pair soon became a group, adding guitarist/vocalist Robb Royer from the band Pleasure Fair, who Gates had produced early in its career. The trio soon signed with Elektra Records, becoming one of the label's first pop bands. Naming themselves Bread, the group released its self-titled debut album in late 1968. At the beginning of 1973, Bread disbanded after a dispute between Gates and Griffin. Griffin claimed that, when the group was conceived, the pair agreed that the singles would be divided equally between the two songwriters; Gates wrote most of Bread's hits and wanted to continue to compose the singles. The two parted ways, with each of the musicians pursuing solo careers. Bread reunited in 1976, releasing Lost Without Your Love in early 1977. The title track became their last Top Ten hit, peaking at number nine. The success could not keep the group together as tensions between Gates and Griffin began to escalate again. After Griffin split from the group, Gates assembled a new version of the band and toured under the name Bread. Griffin sued Gates for using the name, which the duo co-owned. A judge ordered the group not to perform, record, or collect royalty payments until the case was resolved; it wasn't resolved until 1984. In the meantime, Gates and Griffin pursued solo careers. Of the two musicians, Gates was more successful, scoring a number 15 hit in 1978 with the title theme to Goodbye Girl. However, his career declined in the '80s; by the '90s, he was running a California ranch. Griffin relocated to Nashville, forming Dreamer with Randy Meisner in the early '90s.
Make It With You David Gates & Bread Lyrics: Hey have you ever tried, Really reaching out for the other side? I may be climbing on rainbows But, baby here goes.
Dreams they're for those who sleep, Life is for us to keep, And if you're wond'ring What this song is leading to
I want to make it with you I really think that we could make it girl.
No, you don't know me well, In ev'ry little thing only time will tell, If you believe the things that I do. And we'll see it through.
Life can be short or long, Love can be right or wrong, And if I choose the one I'd like to help me through,
I'd like to make it with you I really think that we can make it girl.
Baby you know that Dreams they're for those who sleep, Life is for us to keep And if I choose the one I'd like to help me through,
I'd like to make it with you I really think that we could make it girl.

Ever since the days of old Men would search for wealth untold They'd dig for silver and for gold And leave the empty holes; And way down south in the Everglades Where the black water rolls and the saw grass waves The eagles fly and the otters play In the land of the Seminole;
Chorus So blow, blow Seminole wind Blow like you're never gonna blow again I'm callin' to you like a long-lost friend But I know who you are; And blow, blow from the Okeechobee All the way up to Micanopy (pronounced: Meh-can-o-pee) Blow across the home of the Seminole The alligators and the gull
Progress came and took its toll And in the name of flood control They made their plans and they drained the land Now the Glades are goin' dry And the last time I walked in the swamp I stood up on a cypress stump I listened close and I heard the ghost Of Oseola cry
So blow, blow Seminole wind Blow like you're never gonna blow again I'm callin' to you like a long-lost friend But I know who you are And blow, blow from the Okeechobee All the way up to Micanopy (pronounced: Meh-can-o-pee) Blow across the home of the Seminole The aligators and the gull.
Let's Make Love Baby I've been drifting away Dreaming all day Of holding you Touching you The only thing I want to do Is be with you As close to you As I can be
Let's make love All night long Until all our strength is gone Hold on tight Just let go I wanna feel you in my soul Until the sun comes up Let's make love Oh, baby
Do you know what you do to me Everything inside of me Is wanting you And needing you I'm so in love with you Look in my eyes Let's get lost tonight In each other
Let's make love All night long Until all our strength is gone Hold on tight Just let go I want to feel you in my soul Until the sun comes up Let's make love
Let's make love All night long Until all our strength is gone Hold on tight Just let go I want to feel you in my soul Until the sun comes up Oh, until the sun comes up Let's make love
Oh baby, let's make love All night long All night long Let's make love
America All My Life Lyrics: All my life, without a doubt I give you All my life, now and forever till the Day I die, you and I will share
All the things this changing world can offer So I sing, I'd be happy just to Stay this way, spend each day, with you
There was a time, that I just thought That I would lose my mind You came along and then the sun did shine We started on our way I do recall that every moment spent Was wasted time but then I chose to lay it on the line
I put the past away I put the past away I put the past away
All my life, I will carry you through All my life, between each hour of the passing days I will stay with you
There was a time, that I just thought That I would lose my mind You came along and then the sun did shine We started on our way I do recall that every moment spent Was wasted time then I chose to lay it on the line
I want this all my life I want this all my life I want this all my life I want this all my life I want this all my life I wanted this all my life
